November Birthday Profile Photo Shoot

Back in November, I did a photo shoot for myself in my parents’ bedroom for fun and to update my profile pictures in various accounts. But I never talked to you all about the photo shoot or shared the results with you.

So, here I am, talking to you all about it!

As mentioned before, I did this in November, but on my birthday which happened to be the 6th of the month. Before that, I had managed to budget out some money and purchased a speedlight (external flash) for my camera and was using that as an additional light source. The main light source was the large window and I used a sheet of white drawing paper as a background for my photos.

As you can see, the setup wasn’t the most expensive or flashy, but it worked. I did have to be careful with the tripod and camera since the flash made the camera heavier on the tripod mount and I didn’t want the tripod to tip over.

I photographed myself from the shoulders up in multiple poses and facial expressions to determine which would be used for my profiles online. The photo shoot was around 30 to 40 minutes and I shot around 40-45 photos. A combination of the remote shutter release and self timer helped me achieve this. I also didn’t have a designated portrait lens for the shoot, so my Nikon 35mm f/1.8 G lens had to suffice.

After pulling the images from the camera into Lightroom and Photoshop, I did some editing and decided to create two sets of six headshots. One had black-and-white images while the other had color images. But both contained the same poses and I was happy with the results! Here are a few shown below.

I’m going to keep practicing with the flash to master it a lot better since I’m getting the hang of it. But it is quickly becoming a very useful accessory to have in my camera bag!
